Prior to 1985, all clotting factors used in the treatment of hemophilia were derived from untested and untreated pools of human plasma, a blood component. Consequently 90% of hemophiliacs (and a number of sexual partners and children) alive between 1978 and 1985 were infected with blood-borne viruses such as hepatitis and HIV. New infections from infusions ceased in 1985 when the government required HIV tests on all blood donations and a process to purify pooled plasma was mandated.
Families in the community were devastated by the loss of several loved ones due to HIV and AIDS during this period of time. HFM recognizes the scope of this loss and is committed to providing continued support and education to families and individuals affected by this tragedy.
HFM has been offering annual meetings for people living with HIV and their partners to gather for friendship and support. Please contact Patrice Thomas at 1-800-482-3041 extention 8 for details, or email email@example.com.
