As part of the Great Lakes/V-E HTC Network’s ongoing commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, we expanded on the multiple sessions offered last year live on-line and during the 2022 Regional Meeting with Professor Daicia Price. Last month HFM provided training opportunities via the Gender and Sexual Orientation Competency Training: LGBTQIA+ Inclusion in Practice. This one-hour session was available both January 25th and 26th via Zoom with 29 participants.
Christina Walsh (she/her) who presented is a clinical master’s social worker residing in Traverse City, MI. She has worked in human services, non-profit organizations, addiction recovery, and as a board member and youth director of Polestar LGBT+ Community Center. Christina is experienced working with those looking to find and maintain a life of recovery from substance use disorder, religious abuse, and trauma. Her experience also includes working with LGBTQ+ adults and teens addressing many areas of life including sexual orientation, gender identity, and relationship counseling for LGBTQ partners, parents, or families. Training Objective for the Session:
Like all demographics, LGBTQ people deserve health care that is compassionate and well informed. Historically, this population has been underserved creating apprehension to receiving medical treatments and overall poorer health. As medical professionals, it is our obligation to deliver competent health care that properly understands and is able to treat the needs of this population in a judgement free space. The Great Lakes Region is committed to offering diversity, equity, and inclusion training to the HTC staff and in support of HRSA grant goals.
